MOE is really up to something la. make a subject compulsory called social studies in secondary school curriculum. here's something i noticed about it.
everytime it mentions something good about singapore.
chapter 1, how singapore grew from an unknown country to one which is strong and independant.
chapter 2, understanding the management of traffic flow in singapore, population policy. we are supposed to talk about it a lot in exams.
chapter 3, an obvious attempt to compare singapore's healthcare system with Britian's.
nothing negative said about the singapore healthcare system, yet the book includes maragaret thatcher, its own minister(of britian) saying,'' I came to office with one deliberate intent: to change Britian from a dependant to a self-reliant society, from a give-it-to-me nation, a get-up-and-go instead of sit-back-and-wait-britian.
chapter 4, reporting the conflicts in sri lanka, collaborated chunks and chunks of facts about it. same goes to the protestants vs catholic situation in ireland.( i feel that the textbook enjoys talking so much about the bad stuff if other countries. bloodsheds, discriminations, corruption.....)
chapter 5, IMMEDIATE start of topic, BONDING SINGAPORE.
isn't it that obvious of the message SS wanna bring across. congrats publishers! you've made me see that! wow. awesome details! may i ask about the sources of it? how do i know that the assumptions(of the way people think, eg the catholics and protestants, the citizens of sri lanka) are accurate? simply by putting a name and age there, the state of the person doesn't mean it is not made-up. too bad, i'm just gonna take ss as a subject to memorise. never will it leave me a good impression. the problem is, the textbook(or someone else) never mentioned both the good and bad sides of singapore before being justified to ask the readers to compare it to other countries. stop boasting.
its good to the readers to know something good about singapore. but not to the extend of hinting to the readers that singapore is superior to other countries. but i shall say moe is smart to print the SS textbook in such a way that not only it discreetly put itself infront of other countries, its also printed in a way that no one can go against it.
i seriously do not know how i developed this kind of expectation of what i read. in terms of text which requires me to memorise. ignorance is sometimes not a bliss
